TFL Truck: 2019 Silverado

Seems likely that they'll win truck of the year this time. This is apparently the 100th anniversary of the Chevy truck so they have more motivation than usual perhaps.

There are some very interesting key things about this new truck:
- There is now an available Duramax 3.0L inline 6 diesel. Holy shit. I need to dig in and figure out what this is. Did not expect this at all. 10 speed auto with it, too. Projecting over 30 mpg highway.
- They finally have fixed the offset steering column. That is incredible as they have carried this across decades as legacy geometry.
- 450 lbs lighter with a lighter, stronger frame and more aluminum in the body (the bed is still steel, Ford trolls). GM was already about as light as the F150 so this will put them significantly ahead.
- Cool storage boxes inside the bed which utilize that dead area above the wheel wells. Lockable and weather sealed.
- Composite overload spring in the rear leaf spring pack, which is similar to the material that the Corvette uses as its rear mono spring.
- These look pretty awesome.

And may I just add that even in a huge truck the biggest screen is 8" for the infotainment, which is the same size my 05 STS has.

Good stuff.

Looks pretty good. Hope the power tailgate is optional... So unnecessary and takes forever to open. The rest is pretty good. I would be more interested in a review on a lower optioned model as I wouldn't use this as a daily, and wouldn't want to pay for the extras.

Something tells me Ford fans will not give them a pass for following with the aluminum, even if the bed is steel. I am ready for some fun comment sections.

What matters is these are still V8 and not 6cly turbo (Ford fans)... The last time a V6 turbo was better than an 8 was 1987 (joking, this is not based on any research)... I would prefer the V8 over the V6 cyl even if the V6 had slightly better specs just based on the simplicity and less to break factor.

I agree on the engine thing. Then again, if those Ecoboost V6s really are commonly good for 200-300k trouble-free miles, then I guess they are good enough for most buyers. I definitely prefer my N/A V8s. Especially in a truck.

"The 2019 Silverado will be available with six engine/transmission combinations, giving customers more combinations of performance, efficiency and value to best fit their priorities. This includes new 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management that actively shuts off any number of cylinders, in a variety of combinations, depending on immediate needs to optimize fuel economy. The result of this industry-first technology is instant power when called for, and impressive efficiency.

The Silverado will also be available with an all-new Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel. Chevrolet offers diesel engines in more segments and models than any other brand, including Equinox, Cruze, Colorado, Express, Silverado 1500, Silverado HD and upcoming Silverado medium-duty models.

Both the 3.0L diesel and 6.2L engines are paired with a new Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission as well as start/stop technology to improve fuel economy for optimum performance and efficiency."
That middle paragraph really resonates from a growth perspective. Upcoming medium duty? It's about time. And they are branded Silverado. Why? Because they have to play Ford's game.

2019 Silverado Details
•450 pounds lighter than the outgoing model thanks to mixed-material construction
•Frame-rail chassis and pickup bed remain steel while the hood, doors, and tailgate are made from aluminum •Roll-formed (not stamped) high-strength bed with: •The biggest box in its segment – width is up by seven inches, length is up one inch over the current model
•More bed tie-downs for a total of 12

•Updated powertrain lineup: •Engines: the 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 get updated with what appears to be Dynamic Skip Fire technology aka Dynamic Fuel-Management, which can shut off up to seven cylinders, depending on need
•3.0-liter Inline-six Duramax turbo-diesel engine developed in-house
•Transmission: Ford-GM 10-speed automatic transmission will be coupled to the 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine and the 3.0-liter I-6 turbodiesel
In house engine. I've been searching for a source and I can't find anything, sort of confirming it being in house.

Also the crew cab sounds positively cavernous, like an S-class in terms of legroom, front and rear. Bigger bed. Lighter. Sounds like a winner.

Accordingly, the cab has been stretched, with crew-cab models now offering 3 inches of additional rear-seat legroom for an impressive 44.5 inches of front legroom and 43.8 inches of rear legroom
That is huge.

Most luxury sedans in this segment offer both regular and long-wheelbase models, but the 2016 Cadillac CT6 is sized as an in-betweener that handily serves both purposes. With 40.4 inches of rear legroom, for instance, its back-seat space splits the difference between the Audi A8 and A8L (38.7 and 42.9 inches) and the BMW 7 Series and 7 Series L (38.9 and 44.3 inches). We also found that, compared to the CTS, the back seats feel less claustrophobic because occupants don’t sit as low in relation to the windowsills
Almost as much as a 7-series L. Man.

The “high value” (work truck) trims:
Work Truck features “CHEVROLET” graphic across the grille and tailgate, blacked-out trim and 17-inch steel wheels for maximum durability. The interior features durable vinyl or cloth seats and 7-inch color touch screen.
Custom features a body-color styling theme, 20-inch painted aluminum wheels, LED signature taillamps and available integrated dual exhaust.
Custom Trailboss (new for 2019) adds off-road equipment to the Custom, including a 2-inch suspension lift and the Z71 Off Road Package with a locking rear differential, skid plates, Rancho shocks, 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires.

The “high volume” (mass-appeal) trims:
LT features chrome accents on the bumpers, front grille and mirror caps, Chevrolet bowtie in the grille, LED reflector headlamps and signature daytime running lights. The interior features an 8-inch color touch screen and available leather seating surfaces
RST (new for 2019) brings a street-performance appearance to the LT, with body-color trim, full LED lighting (foglamps, headlamps and taillamps) and up to 22-inch wheels with all-season tires.
LT Trailboss (new for 2019) adds off-road equipment to the LT, including a 2-inch suspension lift and the Z71 Off Road Package, including locking rear differential, skid plates, Rancho shocks, 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires.

And “high feature” (fancy-pants) trims:
LTZ features chrome accents on the bumpers, front grille, mirror caps, door handles and hockey-stick beltline as well as power folding and heated outside rearview mirrors. Leather interior trim is standard equipment.
High Country features an exclusive front grille design with two-tone chrome and bronze finish, body-color accents plus chrome assist steps from wheel to wheel. It also includes the power up/down tailgate as standard equipment.
In a presentation on Saturday, GM President Mark Reuss announced that this generation of Silverado is reportedly “built from the ground up,” meaning new body, new frame, new everything. The truck is as much as 450 pounds lighter than the current model thanks in part to an aluminum hood, doors and tailgate. Everything that “swings,” basically. The panels that don’t move, namely the bedsides and floor, are still made of steel.

The touchscreen needs to die. It’s a damn work truck. Put a standard double-din AM/FM radio in it, like my truck came with.
mandatory backup cameras killed your double-din radio :/
That’s mandatory?
Yup, by May of this year every new vehicle sold in the US is required to have a backup camera.
Me right now:

General Motors didn’t share details on the diesel’s power output, but head of GM product development, Mark Reuss, assured us it would be more powerful than Ford’s new diesel in the F-150. The diesel and the 6.2 will be available with GM’s new Hydramatic 10-speed automatic transmission, while the 5.3 will come with the eight-speed.
Kind of what I expected. And of course it would be more powerful than Ford's.
The significant 450 lbs in weight savings come thanks to the use of aluminum in the hood, doors and rear liftgate. The vehicle’s ‘safety cage’ also uses seven different grades of steel to offer a good mix of lightness and strength. Furthermore, the front upper control arms are made of aluminum, while the rear springs are made of a new carbon-composite material, which shaves more lbs from the pickup.
