Caprice engine swap?
Re: Caprice engine swap?
You never know. They might change their mind or find something else.
Re: Caprice engine swap?
It sounded like the loan was approved and he needed to call tomorrow to like...pay basically.
Re: Caprice engine swap?
Thank god this wasn't the ultimate unicorn.
Re: Caprice engine swap?
This car did check a good proportion of the boxes. Basically the complete options list is non-negotiable. I am flexible on AWD vs RWD. I am flexible on color. However, I am really looking for something as clean as this one appeared to be. I don't know if I'd pay over $6k to get all that, as $6k was really my ceiling. I was already over that when you add sales tax.
To recap, requirements or shall I say KPPs:
- Complete options list including, but not limited to, 1SG, nav/15 speaker BOSE Studio system, heated and ventilated seats, rear heated seats and climate control, FE3, K59 adaptive cruise w/ HUD. It seems pointless to get the car without all the available toys. Which is my prerogative.
- Clean inside and out. Looking for clear headlights, good paint, no visible body damage or scuffs in pictures, seats that aren't all trashed, buttons that aren't worn on the HVAC
So far the process is, I don't even look at it in detail if it doesn't have the 9-spoke 18s. Many do not. Cars with 18s are far, far more likely to meet everything. The only question, at this point in my search, appears to be whether it has K59 cruise or not (which is associated with the HUD - they may be locked together in fact).
I like black, I like white. I will consider all colors if the car meets above requirements.
I did like the under 100k factor on this 05. My thought was I can do the 100k maintenance (first time changes for a lot of fluids most likely) and that will go a long way to make it last. So for a car with 120, 150 or whatever, there would have to be a significant discount. Like $4k instead of $6k. Which based on what I have seen is not totally out of the question at all.
And remember - this is just my ideal STS within my price range. These aren't the specs for my dream car or anything like that. It's more that I finally figured out how to search for these. I enjoy figuring out how to find something - the actual finding is less enjoyable to me.

Re: Caprice engine swap?
New data supporting my point:kevm14 wrote:I will probably have to open up to any drive configuration. Besides, the 2007 gets the 6L50 with 3.23 as the only performance ratio, RWD or AWD. So that wider spread probably helps mitigate the extra weight and inertia of the AWD. Anyway, the point is, I'd rather have all the features if I have to choose.
C/D test of an 05 SRX V8 RWD (5L50) yielded a 15.0 @ 94. 4,429 lb weight. 51% front weight bias, btw, which is awesome.
C/D test of an 07 SRX V8 AWD (6L50) yielded a 14.9 @ 94. 4,708 lb weight. This is probably the weight of my 08. The point is, the 6L50 appears to totally erase the AWD speed penalty by keeping the Northstar closer to the HP peak during WOT acceleration.
So the ~14.6 @ 97 of the 5L50 RWD STS V8 is probably maintained with the 07 AWD STS V8.
All this means is the 07+ AWD is definitely the best way to do AWD. It's just not going to happen in reality. I will still look.
Re: Caprice engine swap?
I refreshed the ad on the dealer website half expecting it to be gone. It was not.
I went out on a limb and texted the dealer if the car was sold.
His reply:
So I call as I am driving home. I asked what happened with this guy who was interested. He said he has not returned the calls.
Then I asked the key question: Does he have a deposit on the car? The answer was no.
So I'm like...uhh, so can we move forward with the plan including pictures of the under carriage, a pic of the driver's seat and of the button panel to the left of the steering column? He said yes. He will take them tomorrow.
Then I asked about price again. I said I could do $6k but no fees. He said he could waive the doc fee or whatever but a paper tag would be $99 or something. That seems reasonable. I need to see if he really has a cost for that though I have to ask if I would really pass up the car over $100...
So the race is on for him to get me pics and for me to then get him a deposit. Would be nice to put the whole car on the card...

Back in the mid-2000s, however, Bluetooth connectivity was still an emerging and fairly exclusive high-end feature. Cadillac's full-size 2005 STS sedan came standard with Bluetooth as part of its OnStar system. As long as your phone is Bluetooth-capable, connecting it to your STS is a simple, straightforward procedure.
