This is real long and probably worth a watch, at some point. This article also touches on the whole Pontiac thing, which evidently was a direct (and required) fallout of the bailout.
I also think it's funny that the gov't came in and was like "one mainstream brand and one luxury brand." Naturally, at the time this was happening, Ford was looking pretty awesome to them. But Lincoln is in the shitter. And Chevy + Cadillac is nowhere near enough to carry GM's US portfolio, imo.
