Interesting - sounds like it might be worth seeking out the STS with the handling package. The braking was pretty good as well, considering the ERA and type of car.

The 08 V6 did a lot better than the 05 V8 in braking. 05 V8 did 70-0 in 177 ft and the 08 V6 did 159 ft which is a pretty big difference.

With the exception of the STS's final model year in 2011, buyers could opt for a 320-hp 4.6-liter V8 coupled to a six-speed auto. Originally, each engine represented a different trim level, as the V8 came standard with the V6's optional heated front and rear seats, memory functions, heated steering wheel and automatic wipers. Key options to look for included a magnetically controlled adaptive suspension, adaptive cruise control, a navigation system and ventilated front seats.
For 2010 and 2011, however, trim levels were introduced. The V6 came in Luxury Sport, Luxury and Premium trims, while the V8 was available in Luxury and Performance. The actual equipment that was available didn't really change. Many of the previous options were simply redistributed into the upper trims, though it should be noted that all but the V6 Luxury trims got upgraded braking, steering and cooling systems.

I just did a quick comparison of interior room to the W-body trio that I was comparing earlier (SS, GXP and Super). The STS is more or less the same as those cars. Less than an inch more rear legroom. Passenger volume is split between the Impala SS and the GXP/Super. When you add the trunk space, the Impala squeaks into the EPA large car category - the STS does not. Just shows you what you pay for in RWD packaging. Which is why the extra 20 hp can't overcome the extra ~350 lbs.
For what it's worth, the SRX has a lot more rear legroom than the STS, though it is on the same wheelbase. That's because I think they set the 2nd row back farther (and they are on sliding adjusters). No I am not going to buy an SRX for myself. Let's not be ridiculous.
But for approximately the same prices, the STS offers RWD, better handling feel even if the ultimate numbers are probably similar, a nicer interior, better luxury toys, and it looks better. You give up 4 tenths and 4 mph.

STSs on Auto Trader within 200 miles, V8 and under $7000:
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale ... pbUu4ddwAV
Not surprisingly they are all 2005.
The one in NJ is kinda scraped up.
The cheap one for $3900 with 160k is in nice shape. They have a BS $250 fee so that's annoying.

I learned that the AWD got nicer looking wheels than the RWD.
No 08+ V8 cars in my price range on Auto Trader or Cars.com. Need to check V6 on the 08+.

08+ V6 cars under $8000:

Not much to choose from. Checking autotrader.
I think these are the same two cars.

So it'll be an 05-07 V8 at least based on Auto Trader or Cars.com listings. CL has a few more options I think.

Alright so a quick scan on my local CL revealed that 08+ STS anything is going to be at least $7500. I think that's more than I want to spend for sure. I guess that pretty much settles it to be the 05-07 V8. More like 05-06.
Time to break out the big gun. Search Tempest.

Random example.
https://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/cto/6075581140.html
2005 Cadillac STS Fully Loaded (Price is Negotiable) - $5800
This car is like a new condition! Everything works excellent it also has heated seats and huge sunroof. It has all wheel drive so no problem during snow. The car has 141K miles. It has navigations system, cd player, XM Radio. New brakes and Battery. Never had any problem.
keep in mind this car is in great conditions, I'm willing to negotiate the price. Please make an offer once you see the car.
If interested please call or text: show contact info and speak with the owner Juan.
NO EMAILS
It is a V8 with AWD. Check out the rear climate controls and heated seat controls. And what I assume is a rear center channel speaker. So many options. I do recall reading that the AWD ones may not have come with the better handling package. I will run the RWD vs AWD thing by Jamie tonight. I probably won't mention anything about AWD since I don't see that helping my case.
