I learned a lot about the drivetrains in those cars. They were bulletproof. They'd always get you home if you had gas in the tank
and air in the tires.

The 425 was the third evolution of the "L block" Cadillac motor that started with the 500 (sometimes called the 502 or 501)
and the major differences between the various versions was bore and stroke.

The 500 had a 4.3" stroke and 4.3" bore. The 472's stroke was shortened to 4.082 but retained the 4.3" bore diameter.
The 425 had 4.082 bore and 4.082 stroke. Compression also changed, with the 425 at 8.0 to 1 if I remember correctly.

The last edition of the L block was the abominable 368, with stroke reduced even farther to 3.8 inches, and equipped with
selective valve unloaders so it could operate in 4, 6, or 8 cylinder modes. It worked poorly and is sometimes called the "oil leaking dogsled".

An interesting technical feature of the L blocks is that they featured enormous main crankshaft journals and bearings,
a full half inch larger in diameter than those in a big block Chevy motor, measuring 3.25 inches compared to 2.75 inches for a big block Chevy motor.
This gave the crank a huge oil flotation area, which probably accounts for the L blocks being so reliable that bottom end failures are all but unknown.

I seem to remember that the redline of the 425 was 5000 RPM but the valves would float before you got to that RPM, effectively acting as a rev limiter,
so it was difficult to blow up a 425. There was a time when I was considering an upgrade to a 500 in my car, so I was checking with junkyards for a good
500 to drop in at some point, and by talking to the junkyard employees, I learned that they really never had one of those cars come in for junking
with a blown engine. "Those engines never come in seized or seriously damaged", so said more than one parts salesman.
The Cadillac V8 is sweet. Now I am excited even though the performance is mediocre.

I keep reading that the stock valve springs float at 4,200 rpm. That's kind of funny.

So it probably drives pretty well at part throttle and moderate RPMs.

Sounds like there is one weak point which applies to more than just the Cadillac V8 of the era: nylon teeth or whatever on the timing gears. That falls apart, can clog the oil pickup and starve the engine for oil. Folks say changing the timing gears is a good idea for long term health. Sigh.

Well at least this isn't a scam. Price is basically on par. Maybe a little better, though it is private.

The all caps annoys me. I do like the color combo. I could drive it I suppose and see if he is even negotiable at all.
This disappeared and is now back.

This goes in the Craigslist Circus thread...
Make a reasonable offer and maybe I'll let it go.
Maybe you'll let it go??? You listed it for sale.

Don't play hardball with a car your daughter can't drive... LOL

I love people that put a car up for sale and then act like they are doing you a favor.
Don't need to sell, testing the waters, I know what I have and what it is worth, no low ballers, no tire kickers...
